How We Run Remote Retrospectives

Hybrid teams need retros that work for everyone, whether they sit in Frankfurt, Leipzig or at home.

by Mira Okafor

Half of our teams are split between Frankfurt, Leipzig and home offices. Retrospectives where some people share a room and others join by video tend to favour the people in the room.

Everyone on their own screen

Our rule is simple: if one person is remote, everyone joins from their own laptop, even if they sit in the same office. The board lives in a shared online whiteboard.

We start with five minutes of silent writing, then group the notes and vote. Silent writing gives quieter colleagues the same space as the loudest voice.

Every retro ends with at most two action items, each with a named owner. Fewer actions means more of them actually get done.
